How New York works out the number
Step 1: Add both incomes
Both parents’ gross incomes are combined, after Social Security and Medicare taxes. The formula applies to the first $193,000.
Step 2: Apply the percentage
17% for one child, 25% for two, 29% for three, 31% for four, and at least 35% for five or more.
Step 3: Split it by income
Each parent is responsible for a share in proportion to their income. The parent the children do not mainly live with pays their share to the other.
This is an estimate, not legal advice. It does not include add-on expenses such as child care, health insurance or education, New York City or Yonkers income tax, self-employment adjustments or spousal maintenance, and a court can depart from the guideline. Figures used: combined income cap $193,000 (effective March 1, 2026), self-support reserve $21,546, poverty income guideline $15,960, Social Security wage base $184,500.
