This was one of the hardest and most stressful times in my life, and he made a genuinely difficult situation so much easier to get through than I ever thought possible. What stood out most was how kind and understanding he was the entire way through. He took the time to really listen, explained everything clearly, and helped us navigate a complicated and emotional situation with patience and care. He never rushed us and never made either of us feel judged, he just focused on getting us both to a fair outcome. Because of how professionally Stephen handled everything, my ex wife and I actually remained friends after it was all done.

About your mediator

Stephen Felman founded Smart Divorce NY in 2014 with a clear purpose: to help couples navigate divorce with less conflict, greater understanding, and mutual respect. Stephen is a certified mediator and a graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in Communications. He brings a calm, balanced approach to one of life’s most difficult transitions.

Effective mediation takes patience, neutrality, and the ability to help people work through disagreements. Stephen gives both spouses the opportunity to be heard, helps them identify common ground, and guides productive conversations toward practical, lasting agreements.

His goal is to help you make informed decisions, maintain control over your future, and move forward with dignity and confidence.

“Stephen believes that divorce is not the end, but a positive transition to a new beginning.”

Six steps, from first conversation to filed

Most mediators stop at the agreement. We also handle the legal work and the court filing.

  1. Step 1: Initial consultation

We talk through your circumstances and explain how mediation works.

  2. Step 2: Identify the issues

Together we list what has to be resolved: parenting, support, property and finances.

  3. Step 3: Exchange information

You each gather what is needed to make informed decisions.

  4. Step 4: Negotiate

You discuss priorities and work through disagreements with the mediator’s help.

  5. Step 5: Agreement

The terms you reach are written up and the divorce paperwork is prepared.

  6. Step 6: Legal review and filing

An attorney is included in our process and our fee, and we file with the courts.

For Glens Falls couples

Sessions are remote, from home or work, with a certified mediator. All you need is a computer or phone, and the two of you do not have to be in the same room. Two to three sessions is typical.

Stephen has mediated for couples across New York by video since 2014. You both meet with him online, settle parenting, support and property, and an attorney writes up and files the agreement, all for one flat fee agreed on your first call. Nothing is billed by the hour.

Glens Falls sits on a county line. Warren County, whose court and clerk are in the Municipal Center on Route 9 in Lake George, covers Glens Falls, Queensbury and Lake George itself. South Glens Falls, Moreau and Saratoga Springs are in Saratoga County, and Hudson Falls and Fort Edward are in Washington County. The filing goes wherever one of you lives.

Couples we work with come from across the Glens Falls area, including Queensbury, Lake George, South Glens Falls, Moreau, Hudson Falls, Fort Edward and Warrensburg. Because every session is remote, where you live within the region makes no difference to how mediation works or what it costs.

Filing your divorce in Warren County

In New York, a divorce is decided by the State Supreme Court, usually in the county where one of you lives. For most Glens Falls couples that is Warren County. Once you reach an agreement, we prepare the paperwork and file it with the court, and an attorney for the legal work is included in our flat fee.

  • Court. Warren County Supreme Court, Warren County Municipal Center, 1340 State Route 9, Lake George, NY 12845
  • County Clerk. Warren County Clerk’s Office, Warren County Municipal Center, 1340 State Route 9, Lake George, NY 12845

Questions Glens Falls couples ask

You are in Buffalo. Does that matter if we live in Glens Falls?

No. Every session is by video, so it works the same from Queensbury or Lake George as it does from Buffalo. Your paperwork is filed in the county where one of you lives, and the attorney who handles the filing is included in the flat fee.

Where is a Glens Falls divorce filed?

A New York divorce is decided by the State Supreme Court in a county where one of you lives. For Glens Falls, Queensbury and Lake George that is Warren County Supreme Court in the Municipal Center at 1340 State Route 9, Lake George. South Glens Falls files in Saratoga County, Hudson Falls in Washington County.

Will we have to appear in court?

Usually not. When both of you have signed a full agreement, the divorce is uncontested and is normally decided on the papers, without either of you appearing. The judge reviews the file and signs the Judgment of Divorce.

How long does it take?

Mediation itself is usually two to three sessions over a few weeks. After that, the time to a signed judgment depends on the court's workload, which varies by county and by time of year, so we give you a realistic estimate at the time rather than a promise.

What does it cost?

One flat fee, quoted on your first call, which covers the mediation sessions, the attorney who prepares and files the papers, and the court filing fees. There is no hourly billing and nothing extra for being outside Buffalo.

Don’t be misled by a low quote. Many mediators stop at the agreement, and many online services stop at the forms, so you pay an attorney and filing costs on top. Our one flat fee covers the whole process, start to filed.

One mediator instead of two retainers, and you know the total before you start. In a litigated divorce, each of you pays your own attorney by the hour, for as long as it takes.

Questions people ask first

Can we mediate if we do not agree on everything?

Yes. Disagreements are common and can be worked through in a structured discussion. Both of you need to be willing to take part voluntarily and negotiate in good faith. The mediator does not decide who is right or force either of you to accept an agreement.

Do we each need a divorce attorney?

The mediator does not represent either of you or give either of you individual legal advice. Each of you may consult your own attorney, and you should understand the legal and financial effect of the agreement before you sign. An attorney for the legal work is included in our flat fee.

How long does mediation take?

Two to three sessions, on average. Simple cases can be resolved in a few sessions. Children, a house, a business, retirement accounts or bigger disagreements can take longer, and sessions are scheduled around both of you.

Is mediation confidential?

Mediation is generally held in private, not in a public courtroom. The exact confidentiality protections depend on your situation and the law that applies to it.

Do we have to go to court?

Mediation helps you reach an agreement, but the divorce still has to go through New York’s legal process. Whether either of you has to appear depends on your case. We prepare the paperwork and file it with the courts.

Is mediation right for everyone?

No. It works best when both of you are willing to communicate openly, share the relevant facts and negotiate in good faith. It may not be right where there are safety concerns or coercion, where one of you is unwilling to negotiate, or where finances are being hidden.
